To fill the gaps left by the recent cancellation of face-to-face training and events AMaGA Victoria is working in partnership with the National Office to provide a series of online webinars, workshops and tutorials. We are in the process of converting  previously scheduled in person events to digital platforms, whilst introducing a series of more responsive events. All events will be added to this page as they are confirmed.

ENVi's Silver Linings 4: Inventing a new future [Past Event]

Thu 16 Jul, 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Building on Silver Linings 3: Now Normal to New Normal, our next session looks to the future, taking its prompt from two quotations, one from Indian novelist, Arundhati Roy:

Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.

And another from American computer scientist, Alan Kay:

The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

If this moment is genuinely an opportunity to imagine our world anew, what does that mean for museum and gallery education? And how might we not only ‘walk through lightly’ ourselves, but lend a helping hand to the students and educators with whom we work? In this session, Andrew Hiskens (consultant and former Manager of Learning at State Library Victoria) will introduce some theoretical approaches to help navigate the kinds of futures we might want to invent.
