Paid Internship

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

AMaGA Victoria’s 12-month paid internship program has been developed in partnership with Deakin University and is currently available exclusively to students and recent graduates of Deakin's Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies Program.

The internship provides a unique opportunity for current students or recent graduates to gain extended hands-on experience within the museum and gallery sector through the lens of peak body advocacy work, programming and events, and public engagement. The aim is to equip the successful candidate with the necessary skills, experience, and connections to increase their chances of securing future employment in a competitive market.

The intern will work under the guidance and supervision of AMaGA Victoria staff while undertaking skill development opportunities in selected focus areas: collection management, digitisation, accessibility, and digital curation (via Victorian Collections); policy planning and strategy, and best practice standards (via Accreditation Programs); public engagement and training (via Events and Professional Development Program); and marketing and communications strategies. These focus areas will be accompanied by targeted outcomes identified at the beginning of the program and reviewed throughout the course of the 12 months. This internship will also provide opportunities for the successful candidate to network with professionals in the industry and participate in professional development activities, further enhancing their employability.

The key aims of the internship are to:

  • Develop and implement a personal development plan, in consultation with the Executive Director, that identifies specific learning goals and strategies for achieving them;

  • Develop and apply practical skills in areas such as policy development and implementation, research, digital exhibition development, collections documentation and digitisation, event planning and delivery, audience engagement, marketing and communications, and office administration;

  • Work collaboratively with other staff members to support the successful delivery of programs and services to museums and galleries and their communities;

  • Develop an understanding of the legal, ethical, and cultural considerations that impact the management of museums and galleries and their collections, as well as how strategies translate into practical policy development and application;

  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities, including attending workshops, seminars, and conferences, to enhance skills and knowledge in the museum and gallery sector;

  • Gain exposure to industry professionals and networks, and to develop a professional network of contacts for future career opportunities;

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new initiatives and projects that align with the Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria's strategic priorities; and

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria's purpose, goals, and strategies for supporting the museum and gallery sector in Victoria.
