Inquiry into the Cultural and Creative Industries in Victoria

AMaGA Victoria has made a submission into the Inquiry into the cultural and creative industries in Victoria.

As the peak body for the Victorian museum and gallery industry, AMaGA Victoria aims to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas in ways that affirm their value, stimulate debate about principles and standards, and inform and inspire staff, volunteers, and supporters. Providing a representative voice for collecting organisations at all government and community levels and foster high museum and gallery management standards through research, policy development, publications, and training.

Victorian museums and galleries are at a critical juncture. The cumulative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and the present financial crisis period puts our sector in a state of disaster response. Sector workers urgently need accessible career pathways and professional development opportunities. Community-run organisations are grappling with an ageing population of volunteers, with their numbers dwindling and no signs of recovery. The facilities that provide the means to preserve and showcase our collective history and culture need repair or renewal. The resources required to research, document, and care for collections properly are insufficient, constrained by a lack of space and ageing infrastructure. Now is a time for urgent support. The sector seeks a robust, ongoing funding environment to sustain, maintain, and survive this period of hardship.
